No Words Matter by Laura Allred Hurtado
“No words Matter,’ said Roger Zelazny, “but man forgets reality and remembers words.” And remembering words is what Jason Manley’s work does. Not just remembers them, but entombs them, in permanence, in sculpture, in bronze, in cement. Is it the meaning that gets encapsulated as it becomes aestheticized or rather, is it the word itself, as a symbol, now unleashed from its original context, reframed, reordered, and repurposed? Reinterpretation is a pervasive theme as is the architecture of words, sentences and letter shapes. Semantics which are framed and made manifest in construction materials, taking on the body of a building, the angle of a corner, the tangibility of a home.
And yet, the words he often uses as building blocks are fleeting—pulled from text messages, lifted from a record label or dragged from a commercial sign. And the words withdrawn from the original sender, both lose and take on meaning. Certainly, there are fragments of a William Carlos Williams poem that feel concrete and clear, but other works, like Five Gallon, with words that can be read only from the inside of the bucket, ultimately lose their reference. So, the message isn’t about meaning making from the words (and the narrative they create) themselves but rather meaning making from the form, from the art object, found in the translation from fleeting and ephemeral to solid and permanent.
